The Collective Subconscious

Presented by Insomniac Collective

Insomniac Collective, was founded in 1999 by Empyre in Houston, Texas. What began as a graffiti crew made up of friends from Jefferson Davis High School in North Houston quickly grew into a full-fledged street art collective. Early members included  W3r3on3, Krazy, Devoe, Cover, and Serk, and over time the collective expanded through a kind of collective unconscious, connecting with like-minded artists such as Weah (Daniel Anguilu), Hew, Magik, Dense, Nacho, Gones, Heph, Info, Kato, and Stoic.

While members have come and gone—each taking their own creative path—the crew has remained rooted in its original mission: to create, disrupt, and push artistic boundaries. Originally known for their bold, unauthorized works scattered across the city, the Insomniacs have since transitioned from back-alley walls and freeway underpasses to galleries, large-scale murals, and public art installations.

Their impact on Houston’s art scene is undeniable. They played a major role in founding the Harrisburg Art Museum (HAM) and were key contributors to the now-demolished Houston Graffiti Park. From their beginnings as a tight-knit group of taggers to becoming a recognized and influential force in Texas art, the INS Crew continues to leave its mark—visibly, unapologetically, and creatively.

The Collective Subconscious

The Collective Subconscious is a visual exploration of instinct, legacy, and creative reflex—an exhibition by the Houston-born INS Crew, also known as the Insomniacs. For these artists, creation is not just intentional—it’s inevitable. Art flows from them as a natural response to the world around them. It’s how they process, communicate, and exist.

This show dives into the idea that creativity can live just beneath the surface—ready to emerge without force or formula. It’s about the mind always in motion, always observing, always translating life into image. The featured works, a mix of paintings and photographic compositions, are fresh reflections of where each artist stands now—while honoring where they came from and who they came up with.

Rooted in street culture and graffiti, but evolving through years of experimentation and growth, the artists present work that fuses raw street influence with elements of formal composition. These pieces pay tribute to the crew’s journey, to their crewmates, and to their ongoing evolution as individuals and as a collective.

This exhibition is a layered offering—part reflection, part ritual, and part declaration. It reminds us that for some, art isn’t just made—it’s lived, breathed, and embedded deep in the subconscious.
